How is BAC Water used in research?
Bacteriostatic water is sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol, a preservative that inhibits the growth of most common bacteria. In laboratory work it is used as a diluent for reconstituting lyophilized reference standards where a single vial will be sampled more than once, since the bacteriostatic agent reduces the risk of contamination between withdrawals.
Benzyl alcohol at this concentration is a widely characterised bacteriostatic additive. It is not a sterilising agent and does not render a contaminated preparation sterile.
